The Upcycle Sessions: Meet William Wood Watches

In 2016, Johnny Garrett’s Kickstarter campaign for William Wood watches raised more than 25,000 Euros in less than a week. And it’s not surprising that the founder’s brand premise spoke to so many.

Garrett’s grandfather William

Garrett launched the line in honor of his late Grandfather, William Wood, who served in the British Fire Service for more than 25 years. A 1920s firefighter’s helmet is emblazoned into the brand’s logo to honor Wood and all who served.

Upcycling Rescue Materials

But Garrett didn’t stop at a symbol only. For the Valiant Collection, William Wood melted down an original 1920s British brass firefighter’s helmet inside each watch. Plus, straps are crafted from cast-off Angus Duraline British fire hose rubber. Then, watches are assembled to perfection in the heart of London’s famed Hatton Garden jewelry district.

On the face of the watch, note details like checkered markings around the outside of the dial mirror to represent a British fire engine, a second hand that takes inspiration from the chime of a vintage fire bell, and blue-tinted double-domed sapphire crystal glass to pay homage to Wood’s tenure on the “blue watch.”

The Blue Watch: watches are listed by Bezel color, with the option of four strap colors.

Styling With Fall ’Fits

For fall, streetwear can’t get enough of the utilitarian army surplus and workwear trends. Luxe yet durable, William Wood watches are the perfect complement to these styles with four strap color options. You can also customize the bezel in a rich red, deep blue, or classic silver or rose gold.

The olive strap is perfect with on-trend camo and Army drab styles, and navy pairs well with cream tones and khaki styles (like your new chore coat). Make your sneakers pop by pairing with a statement style in yellow or red.

Of course, we’re never tired of an all-black look, which we prefer with the more elevated Chivalrous collection, complete with black rubber or metal straps.

Limited Editions

For those looking for a unique, stand-out piece, the brand is perhaps best known for its limited edition offerings. Launching this season, a Bronze/Navy watch features a bronze case and blue bezel. Timeless yet on-trend, the style complements fall’s penchant for olive, red, and silver tones.
